In the year of its foundation in 1990, the Institut is launched on the premises of the Philips Research Laboratory in Hamburg with 15 employees and a budget equivalent to 0.53 million euros. In 1994, the Institute relocates from Hamburg to Braunschweig and, in 2010, receives a new building in which workpieces are henceforth processed - from cleaning and pretreatment through to coating - on an industrial scale.
The research focus of the Fraunhofer IST is the development of surface technologies with expertise in the associated product and production systems. The aim is the development of customized and sustainable solutions - from the prototype, through economical production scenarios, and on to scaling-up to an industrial level - and all this in accordance with the requirements of closed material and resource cycles.
