As a result of the vision of emission-free aviation, a radical change is currently taking place in the development of aircraft and their energy storage systems. Consequently, the need has arisen for a systemic approach to the utilization of new material systems, adapted processes and evaluation with regard to the contribution towards emission reduction. Furthermore, the stricter legal framework conditions regarding materials which are hazardous to health and the environment further intensify the necessity for new materials.
The Fraunhofer IST has acquired many years of experience in the modification and design of surfaces. With our expertise, we develop solutions for the substitution of critical substances such as Cd or Cr(VI) in aviation. In collaboration with our customers and partners, we are working on the further development of energy storage systems, e.g. hydrogen tanks, solid-state batteries, and fuel cells. For interior applications, we functionalize surfaces in order to equip them, for example, with integrated sensors for the realization of smart systems or with antibacterial layers for disinfection purposes. For the optimization of aircraft structures, we are working on the improvement of joining connections, the anti-reflective treatment of windshields, and ice-free surfaces. For our customers in the production sector, we offer the development of tribological coatings, e.g. to extend tool life. We would be pleased to discuss specific tasks with you. Please do not hesitate to contact us.
