An important aspect in the use of photocatalytic materials is the assessment of long-term stability. Due to the typical degradation processes on the surface, the catalyst can poison itself, e.g. by the formation of mineral salts. Mechanical stresses can also reduce service life over the long term. At the Fraunhofer IST, these effects are investigated by working with the customer to determine realistic stress scenarios and to find the best way to coordinate the necessary analytics in order to quantify the photocatalytic long-term stability of the products.
