At the Fraunhofer IST, we use the salt spray test to test the corrosion resistance of materials.
With the help of a salt spray test in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9227, the corrosion resistance of a material or a corrosion-protection coating thereon can be determined in principle. Typical test times range from 96 h to 1000 h. The corrosion resistance of a steel product provided with corrosion protection is derived from the test time that a test specimen can withstand in the test without red rust becoming visible in the base material. Salt spray tests are well suited for comparing materials and corrosion-protection systems with one another.
