Abrasion test by means of the sand trickling method (DIN 52348)

The abrasion test using the sand trickling method serves to test the behavior of surfaces (e.g. glass or plastic) subjected to blast wear and hazing (scratching). The test can be performed on both flat and curved surfaces. Results are evaluated either by measuring the increase in scattered light (turbidity) of the disc or by determining the change in roughness of the surface

Applications

The method can be used, for example, to evaluate surfaces for desert deployment. Another application is the testing of watch glasses and mobile-phone screens which are exposed to constant wear and shocks. In some cases, anti-reflective coatings are used here, and this test is applied to determine their scratch resistance.
