Newsletter of the Fraunhofer IST

Editorial

Dear reader,

In this newsletter, the second for the year 2020, we would very much like to share with you the most important events, project results and development outcomes as well as the activities which have characterized our daily routines in recent times. We are pleased to be able to report that despite major changes and challenges, the Fraunhofer IST has continued to be highly active in recent months, thereby pursuing its networking and research endeavors. With its expertise the Fraunhofer IST is involved in a number of projects to deal with the direct effects and later consequences of the corona pandemic. Within our “Answered...“ section, Professor Günter Bräuer explains how glass can be made invisible.

Furthermore, we would like to draw your attention to our Annual Report for the year 2019. In addition, you are more than welcome to visit us on our LinkedIn® page. We look forward to updating you there with news from the Fraunhofer IST and to exchanging ideas and information with you.

First of all, however, we sincerely hope that you will enjoy reading our reports and wish you a very pleasant summer.

Highlights

Which developments can deal with the effects and later consequences of the corona pandemic? The Fraunhofer IST has been particularly concerned with these question recently.

Four new competence clusters within the BMBF “Forschungsfabrik Batterie” umbrella concept

The German government wants to sustainably strengthen battery research in Germany along the entire value chain, to accelerate the transfer into industrial applications and to support the development of battery-cell production in Germany.

Projects in the anti corona program

Surfaces play a central role in the containment of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: from the sterilization of clothing and medical equipment through to the development of diagnostic and biosensor systems. With its expertise the Fraunhofer IST is involved in a number of projects to deal with direct effects and the later consequences of the corona pandemic.

Our expertise at a glance

Following the lockdown imposed as a result of the corona pandemic, a degree of normality is now slowly returning to everyday life at the Fraunhofer IST. One accompanying measure was the redesign of our entrance foyer. This is now the setting for a resplendent overview of our expertise which demonstrates how strongly networked and active the Fraunhofer IST is, at its various locations, in providing surfaces and films for future-oriented product and production systems in a wide range of applications.

Research

The direct metallization of plastics using HIPMIS technology and the model calculation for nitrogen oxide degradation using photocatalysis are a selection of topics that are keeping us busy. You can find numerous other contributions about research activities and results of the Fraunhofer IST in our annual report 2019.

Direct metallization of plastics by means of HIPIMS

At the Fraunhofer IST, studies into direct metallization with aluminum and with chromium have been carried out. These studies have produced promising results with regard to the adhesive strength on plastics.

Model calculations for the degradation of nitrogen oxides by means of photocatalysis

The degradation potential of photocatalytically equipped surfaces for nitrogen oxide reduction can be determined by means of numerical simulation.
