Although Germany is one of the countries with the strongest research in energy storage, the gap between the state-of-the-art in research and industrial maturity needs to be closed for innovative energy storage technologies. The goal of the Fraunhofer Center ZESS is to establish a research and transfer platform that will lead mobile and stationary energy storage systems to market maturity.
In its five-year start-up phase, ZESS strives to bring mobile and stationary energy storage systems of the next generation to industrial maturity. To facilitate this ambition, ZESS supports the cooperation between different players in Lower Saxony. Fraunhofer IST, as one of the key players in ZESS, is contributing by developing innovative solutions along the entire value chain. With 21 start-up projects, research at Fraunhofer IST focuses on material and process development, the planning and design of processes, process chains and factories, and technical, economic and ecological evaluations.
With the support of Fraunhofer IST, ZESS is being established as a Fraunhofer Project Center at the research airport in Braunschweig. Through the synergetic cooperation of the partners in the Center, material systems and manufacturing processes of energy storage systems can be successfully further developed and brought to industrial maturity.
