Challenge

RNA-based medicines and treatments face significant challenges in medical and pharmaceutical technology. The instability of RNA necessitates secure encapsulation or ultra-cool storage in order to prevent its rapid degradation. In addition, RNA molecules must be stabilized and, if necessary, specifically modified in such a way that they reach their target in the body and remain active there long enough to achieve therapeutic effects.

Solution

The Graduate Program RNApp is focusing on innovative approaches for the stabilization and packaging of RNA-based medicinal products. The Fraunhofer IST is developing smart primary packaging materials with modified surfaces in order to minimize the interactions between lipid nanoparticles (LNP) and the packaging surface. In order to control adhesion, various surface modifications are being developed that improve the storage stability of therapeutically relevant liquid and solid RNA systems. In addition to the chemical composition, the roughness and topography of the packaging surfaces are also being modified.

Added value

By pooling the expertise of the project participants, it should be possible to transfer new RNA-based medicines and therapies into clinical practice more quickly and efficiently and to overcome fundamental technological hurdles. To achieve this, the project is being funded with 3.2 million euros from the resources of the zukunft.niedersachsen program.
