Braunschweig, the city of Henry the Lion, has approx. 250,000 inhabitants and is the biggest city located between Hannover and Berlin. It is characterized by an appealing and exciting blend of the past and the present, tradition and progress.

The city has been given its distinctive profile by the constant development of its cultural, its research and technology scenes and presents a panorama with a huge variety of culture, history and economical richness.

Braunschweig is a home of research: Scientists such as Carl Friedrich Gauß or Agnes Pockels are evidence of a long science tradition. Today Braunschweig is one of the most intensive regions for research and development and has the highest density of scientists within the European Union.

Over 20,000 young people are studying at the Technische Universität Braunschweig – approx. 10,000 of them in technical fields. Bright minds from Braunschweig do research, teach and work in 27 renowned research institutions and 250 high-tech companies.

By airplane and train

The closest international airport is Hannover Airport (70 km from Braunschweig). At Hannover airport take the rapid-transit railway S5 to Hannover main station (about 15 minutes), from there take an Intercity or the Regional Express train to Braunschweig main station. A cab ride from main station to Fraunhofer IST takes about 15 minutes.

Public transportation

At Braunschweig main station take Bus 436 or Buses 411 direction Lamme or 419 to Jasperallee, transfer to Bus 416 direction Kralenriede or Tram M1 to Rathaus, transfer to Bus 416 direction Kralenriede. Get off at Michelfelderplatz from where it is a five-minute walk to the Fraunhofer IST.

By car

From the north

Coming from the freeway A7 at the exit 57 (Kreuz Hannover-Ost) take the A2, direction Berlin / Braunschweig. Further see “From the West“.

From freeway A39 at exit 58 (Kreuz Wolfsburg / Königslutter) take the A2, direction Hannover / Kassel / Braunschweig. Further see “From the East“.

From the east

On the Autobahn A2 take exit 56 (Braunschweig-Flughafen), direction BS-Kralenriede / Zentrum, turn left into Hermann-Blenk-Straße and again left at the end of the street. Make a right turn into Steinriedendamm at the next traffic lights, then follow the road up to the next pedest-rian lights and turn left (follow signpost to Fraunhofer IST).

From the south

On freeway A7 at exit 64 (Dreieck Salzgitter) take the Autobahn A39, direction Berlin / Braunschweig / Salzgitter, at exit 4 (Kreuz Ölper) take the freeway A392, direction Zentrum, and follow the signposts to Hamburger Str. / A392. At the first traffic lights turn left into Hamburger Straße, then make a right turn after 600 m and follow Siegfriedstraße for 1.3 km. Turn left into Bienroder Weg and make a right turn after 1.4 km (follow signpost to Fraunhofer IST).

From the west

On the freeway A2 take the exit 56 (Braunschweig-Flughafen), direction BS-Kralenriede / Zentrum, turn left into Waggumer Weg and again left into Hermann-Blenk-Straße, make another left turn at the end of the street. Make a right turn into Steinriedendamm at the next traffic lights, then follow the road up to the next pedestrian lights and turn left (follow signpost to Fraunhofer IST).
