Newsletter of the Fraunhofer IST

Editorial

Dear reader,

With the arrival of spring, we are pleased to send you our first Newsletter for the year 2019. It is a special year, as 70 years ago on 26th March, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft was founded. The motto of the anniversary year: 70 years of Fraunhofer. 70 years of future. #WHATSNEXT. In accordance with this motto, a great number of things happened at the Fraunhofer IST during the first weeks of the year, and even more are planned. But please see for yourself…

We hope you have a lot of fun reading the Newsletter!

Warmest greetings.

The Editorial Team

Invitation to the Hannover Messe

From Industry 4.0, digitization, simulation and modeling of materials, through processes, product and production systems, and on to entire factories: These are topics which are increasingly becoming the focus of attention at the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films.

Accordingly, the Institute will once again be present at this year's Hannover Messe from 1st to 5th April 2019. On the Fraunhofer joint stand “Digital Solutions & New Materials” (Hall 6, Stand A30), we will be presenting the following topics:

  • Friction reduction and wear protection for engine parts, machine components and tools
  • Wear-resistant antifouling and anti-adhesion coatings
  • Thin-film sensor systems for the measurement of characteristic data in high-load areas of production facilities
  • Simulation of coating processes in thin-film technology
  • Cold plasma spraying

If you would like to visit us at the Hannover Messe, please do not hesitate to register for a day ticket via this link or the adjacent button “Ticket“.

We look forward to your visit.

Highlights

Read the news about the Fraunhofer IST from the past months:

Joint research platform for energy storage systems

The new Fraunhofer Project Center for Energy Storage and Systems ZESS was inaugurated on February 7, 2019 in Braunschweig. It is a joint initiative of the Fraunhofer Institutes IKTS, IFAM, and IST – in close cooperation with the TU Braunschweig. The purpose is to develop existing energy storage systems, both mobile and stationary, to the level of industrial maturity, and to demonstrate new solutions.

Signing of contract for ICON project in South Africa

On January 28th, 2019 in South Africa, Prof. Reimund Neugebauer, President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, and Prof. Eugene Cloete, Vice Rector of Stellenbosch University, signed the contract for the implementation of an ICON project between the university and Fraunhofer. The participants are the Fraunhofer Institutes IGB, ISE, IOSB and IST.

Clean water for Southern Africa

Over 100 million people in Southern Africa have no access to clean water – many sources in rural areas are contaminated. In the SafeWaterAfrica project, African and European partners are working closely together to develop a decentralized system solution for water purification that can be operated and maintained autonomously by rural inhabitants. Researchers at the Fraunhofer IST are coordinating the project.

Research

Look forward to two exciting articles concerning new results from the diverse research work carried out at the Fraunhofer IST, which we will be presenting on the Hanover Fair from 1 to 4 April 2019 on the basis of our exhibits in addition to numerous other topics:

Development of a sensory kingpin

At the Fraunhofer IST, a piezoresistive thin-film system for measuring force is being manufactured which will be deposited directly on the complexly formed kingpins.

Cold plasma spraying for 3D molded interconnect devices

Under the catchphrase “Additive mechatronization”, the development of new processes which combine the additive generation of mechanical structures with electrical functionalization is moving to the fore. Cold plasma spraying, developed at the Fraunhofer IST, enables polymer components to be selectively metallized without wet chemistry and without pre-treatment or post-treatment steps.

Trade fairs and exhibitions

In the coming months, the Fraunhofer IST will be active at the following trade fairs, conferences and events:

Hannover Messe 2019

Hannover, April 1 – 5, 2019

The Fraunhofer IST is represented in two halls: in hall 6 as part of the joint booth of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft ”Digital Solutions & New Materials” and in the ”Research & Technology” hall 2.

SVC TechCon 2019

Long Beach, USA, April 27 – May 2, 2019

As part of the two-day technical exhibition and in addition to more than 150 other exhibitors, the Fraunhofer IST will present the latest results in the fields of HIPIMS technology, optical coatings and simulation.

Paris Air Show 2019

Le-Bourget Paris, France, June 17 – 21, 2019

The Fraunhofer IST presents metallized CFRP waveguide antennas of the ”Sentinel mission”, optical filters and lenses as well as additive manufactured components for the use in outer space.

LASER World of Photonics 2019

München, June 24 – 27, 2019

The Fraunhofer IST presents ultra-precise optical interference and bandpass filters as well as the monitoring system MOCCA+®.

Lectures

During the next quarter, many Fraunhofer IST scientists will be travelling internationally to conferences, conventions, and seminars in order to present their research results to expert audiences. We give you an overview of the planned talks below.
