Newsletter of the Fraunhofer IST

Editorial

Dear reader,

Reduced environmental pollution, lower consumption of resources, less waste – in our third Newsletter for this year we present, amongst other things, the possibilities that plasma-coated paper offers for the packaging industry and how the lifespan and performance of batteries for electric cars are to be improved.

Furthermore, in an interview, our colleague Stefan Bruns reveals how filters coated at the Fraunhofer IST found their way into the stratosphere and what role they play in the investigation of physical processes in the Sun’s atmosphere. Dr. Kristina Lachmann and Dr. Jan Henrik Finke explain the innovation potential that surface technology offers for pharmaceutical production technology and, last but not least, you will become acquainted with our colleague Carolin Buttler. In the latest video of our series “In portrait”, she introduces herself and presents her work as a recruiter.

We hope you enjoy reading and watching the Newsletter and we wish you a sunny and pleasant fall.

Highlights

Plasma-coated paper as a plastic alternative for the packaging industry

Plastic waste, harmful to the environment, has been increasing continually in Germany in recent years. Packaging generates particularly high volumes of waste. In the BioPlas4Paper project, researchers from the Fraunhofer IST and project partners have used a coating process to create water-repellent and plant-based barrier coatings on paper, thereby im-proving the paper’s resistance to the effects of the weather.

Photonica 2024: The journey continues

Already for the second time, the Photonica Summer School inspired twenty young international scientists. They spent a week gaining an insight into five Fraunhofer Institutes and their research in the field of photonics, traveling from Braunschweig to Berlin via Jena and Dresden. Fraunhofer Photonica was organized by the Fraunhofer Group for Light & Surfaces under the direction of Fraunhofer IPM.

EV battery enclosures with lower carbon emissions

More charging power, higher range, lower environmental impact: In the COOLBat joint research project, researchers from the Fraunhofer IWU have teamed up with partners to develop next-generation battery enclosures for electric vehicles. The objective is to make the enclosures, a central component in any electric vehicle, lighter and cut the carbon dioxide emitted to manufacture them by 15 percent.

Strengthening German-Canadian research cooperation

On behalf of the Canadian Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN), the President of the European-Canadian Centre for Innovation and Research, Dr Britta Baron, visited TU Braunschweig at the beginning of August. The aim of her visit was to discuss the possibility of cooperation between the two universities in the field of wind and hydrogen economy.

Science Minister visits the Fraunhofer campus in Braunschweig

Within the framework of his summer tour, Lower Saxony’s Minister for Science and Culture, Falko Mohrs, visited the Fraunhofer institutes for Wood Research, Wilhelm-Klauditz-Institut WKI and for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST in Braunschweig on the 8th of July 2024.

Surface technology and pharmaceutical process engineering - Find out in an interview with Dr. Kristina Lachmann and Dr. Jan Henrik Fink where surface technologies play a role in pharmaceutical production and how manufacturing processes can be optimized using innovative coatings. In addition, our colleague Stefan Bruns gives an insight into the “Sunrise III” project and explains how filters coated at the Fraunhofer IST contribute to research into solar activity and its influence on space weather.
